124 journalists were killed worldwide in 2024, most killed in Israel; Pakistan also named in the report. Many journalists are being killed amid the ongoing wars and conflicts in the world. This has been revealed in a recent report, the Committee to Protect Journalists said that last year a record number of journalists were killed around the world.
Also, according to the committee (Committee to Protect Journalists), Israel is responsible for 70% of these deaths. CPJ said in a statement that at least 124 journalists have died in 18 countries in 2024.
This will be the deadliest year for journalists and media workers since the committee began recording these figures more than three decades ago.
The CPJ said 85 journalists have died at the hands of the Israeli army in the Israel-Gaza war and accused Israel of suppressing investigations into the incidents, blaming journalists, and ignoring its duty to hold people accountable for the killings.
In this regard, the Israeli army said that it was not given enough information about the alleged incidents and therefore was not able to prevent them, adding that it takes all possible measures to minimize the harm to journalists and civilians. The committee said that last year Sudan and Pakistan had the second highest number of journalists killed.
According to the CPJ, the IDF has never and will never deliberately target journalists. The number of journalists and media workers killed in 2024 is much higher than in recent years – 102 were killed in 2023 and 69 in 2022.
The previous record high for deaths was in 2007, when 113 journalists lost their lives, almost half of them due to the Iraq war, the committee said. Sudan and Pakistan saw the second-highest number of journalists killed last year, the committee said.
