The Standing Committee of the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) approved the proposal to develop an Air Force base in Ladakh.
This air base will be developed in an area of 508 hectares near the Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary in Ladakh.
NBWL also approved nine more strategic projects in Changthang and Karakoram Wildlife Sanctuaries.
The Standing Committee of NBWL, headed by Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav, approved the proposal on July 29.
The Standing Committee approved the use of 1259.25 hectares of land of Changthang Sanctuary in Eastern Ladakh, about 40-50 km from the International Border, as Mahe Field Firing Range (MFFR).
At present, it is the only firing range in the entire Eastern Ladakh sector where all types of weapons can be fired.

The Standing Committee has also approved proposals to upgrade three major roads in the strategically important area.
Of these, 107.406 hectares of land are to be given for the construction of the T-Salu Changchemo road from Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary and 27.5 hectares for the Khalsar-Agham road from Karakoram Wildlife Sanctuary.
Apart from this, permission has been given to lay optical fiber cables in Changthang and Karakoram Wildlife Sanctuaries.
At the same time, according to the report of the news agency, Air Chief Marshal VR Choudhary on Thursday stressed the need to intensify operational preparedness.
He was addressing the Commanders’ Conference of Eastern Air Command.
He apprised the commanders about the prevailing security scenario, the geopolitical situation, and the role of the IAF in dealing with various contingencies.
Air Chief Marshal Choudhary also asked to maintain high operational readiness round the clock and focus on capacity addition.
The Chief of Air Staff also presented trophies to the Air Force Stations for excellence in the field of Operations, Maintenance, and Administration.
