Amit Shah to visit Manipur soon for talks on the Naga issue.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to visit Manipur this month to hold talks with various parties on the politically important Naga issue.

An official of Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphew Rio said that Assam Finance and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma suddenly arrived in Kohima.

He held a closed-door meeting with the Chief Minister three days ago to have a role in Shah’s visit.

Though Sarma did not reveal anything about the conversation with the Chief Minister of Nagaland, sources close to him said that Shah has given him the responsibility to take stock of the situation on the Naga issue.

Confirming the visit of the Home Minister in Imphal, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said that Shah had expressed a desire to meet elected parties and other parties including civil society members to discuss the Naga issue.

Naga separatism has been a challenge for seven decades

Significantly, the issue of Naga separatism has been a challenge to India’s sovereignty and integrity for the last seven decades.

The central government tried many bets to deal with it.

The government sometimes tried the provisions of the Armed Forces Privilege Act and sometimes declared the Naga rebel groups NSCN (IM) and NSCN (Khaplang) as a banned group.

The formation of a violent separatist group called the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (IM) in 1980 gave new energy to the Naga movement.

Prominent leaders of this group included Aizak and Muivah.

This revived the old demands of the Naga rebels. Later (NSCN Khaplang) was formed in 1988 as a Naga rebel group. After this, the group rejected the 1975 Shillong Accord. This again led to unrest in North East India.
