Argentina Qualified For The Next Year’s Football World Cup

Argentina qualified for the World Cup through the World Cup qualifiers.

Argentina secured their place in next year’s World Cup in Qatar after playing out a goalless draw in their South American World Cup qualifying match against arch-rivals Brazil.

With this, Argentina’s superstar striker Leon Messi has got his fifth and possibly last chance to win the World Cup title.

Second-placed Argentina qualified for the tournament in Qatar after third-place Ecuador’s 2–0 win over Chile.

With Argentina now on 29 points and only four qualifier matches left, no more than two teams can leave the Messi-led side behind.

Table-toppers Brazil has already made it to the World Cup. Four teams from South America receive direct entry into the World Cup, while the fifth-placed team plays in the intercontinental playoffs.

Brazil has 35 points which are six more than Argentina.

These two teams have played 13 matches which is one less than the other teams as the match between them in September was postponed only seven minutes later due to the COVID-19 restrictions.

World Cup football body FIFA is yet to decide on this match. Ecuador is in third place with 23 points. Teams other than the last-placed team Venezuela have a chance to qualify.

Colombia and Peru have 17 points, while Chile and Uruguay are sixth and seventh with 16 points. Bolivia (15 points) and Paraguay (13 points) also remain in the race.

Bolivia beat Uruguay 3–0 and Peru 2–1 to Venezuela in another match, while Colombia and Paraguay ended in a goalless draw.

Australia’s hopes got a setback.

Australia’s hopes of qualifying directly for next year’s World Cup in Qatar were dealt a blow when China pushed them to third place in the group after being held to a 1-1 draw.

Australia was on their way to register their first win in three matches with a first-half goal from Michael Duke, but China got a penalty 20 minutes before the end of the match, which Wu Lei converted to draw the match.

Australia, looking for a place in the World Cup for the fifth time in a row, has slipped to third place in Group B with 11 points from six matches from this draw. Australia is one point behind Japan, who beat Oman 1-0.
