Assam Will Shut Down All Government-Run Madrasas

Assam will shut down all government-run madrasas from next month. Assam Health and Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma have said that the state government has decided to close all government madrasas from November.

Talking to reporters on Saturday, he said that we will close all government-run madrasas from next month. The government will issue a notification in this regard. Biswa Sarma said that the government has launched a scheme named Sneh Sparsh.

Under this, the liver, kidney, or bone marrow transplant of a child below 12 years will be free by the government. The camp will be organized on the 10th of every month so that this scheme can be available to everyone. The state government will provide funds for this scheme.

Since this announcement by the Assam government, the head of AIUDF and Lok Sabha MP Badruddin Ajmal has been very upset. He said that if the state government of BJP will close the government madrasa, then their government will reopen them.

He claimed that assembly elections are proposed in the state next year. If his party comes with a majority, it will reopen all the government-shuttered madrasas.

Let me tell you that earlier in February, Himanta announced that the government is not only preparing to close the state government-run madrasas but also the government Sanskrit schools will be closed.

However, he later clarified that government funds cannot be spent for any religious education in a secular country. Now on Thursday, he said that the matter of Sanskrit education is different.

Significantly, 614 madrasas are being run by the government in Assam. There are 900 private seminaries. Most madrasas are run by Jamial Ulma.

Meanwhile, there are around 100 Sanskrit institutions in the state, and 500 are private. Every year the government spends 3 to 4 crores on madrasas, while Sanskrit institutions spend about 1 crore rupees each year.
