BrahMos supersonic missile will be capable of attacking enemy positions at a distance of more than 800 km.
India is developing a new air-launched version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile that will be capable of hitting enemy positions at a range of more than 800 km.
After being launched from the first Sukhoi fighter aircraft, the missile had the ability to hit targets at a distance of about 300 km.
Sources said that the range of BrahMos missiles has already been increased. The air-to-air range increases at altitude, the missile can travel a longer range and can hit targets of 800 km and above.
The BrahMos missile recently came into the limelight when it misfired due to a technical snag from a unit of the Indian Air Force during a Command Air Staff Inspection (CASI) there.
The missile fell into Pakistani territory, causing little damage to property and equipment there and there was no loss of life or property.
After the incident, India sent a letter to Pakistani authorities expressing deep regret over the incident and also issued a statement in this regard.
Pakistan is trying to raise the issue of misfiring of BrahMos and is trying to question the security of India’s missile arsenal at the international level, but sources said that BrahMos is just a strategic missile.
India has recently increased the range of the strategic missile. It can go beyond 500 km with enhanced capability in its software.
The Indian Air Force has equipped about 40 of its Sukhoi-30 fighter jets with BrahMos cruise missiles that can cause massive destruction to enemy camps.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) brought these aircraft from its home base in Thanjavur to the northern region during the peak of the conflict with China.
The Air Force also operates surface-to-surface squadrons of aircraft to carry out pin-point attacks against critical enemy installations and targets.
