In a heroic rescue mission, the Border Security Force (BSF) on Wednesday airlifted 45 villagers trapped in floods caused by the rising Chenab river in Jammu’s Akhnoor sector. According to officials, the crisis unfolded in Fathu Kotli village of Garkhal area, where floodwaters entered homes and stranded dozens of people. The Chenab River, flowing dangerously above its 42-feet evacuation mark, posed a serious threat to villagers.
Despite continuous attempts by the police, NDRF (National Disaster Response Force), and SDRF (State Disaster Response Force), rescue teams were unable to reach the trapped population due to heavy currents and rising water levels.
The district administration then sought urgent air support from the BSF. Responding swiftly, the BSF deployed its helicopter and launched a high-risk evacuation mission amid heavy rainfall and adverse weather conditions.
Officials confirmed that the BSF helicopter made three sorties, successfully airlifting all 45 civilians, including women, children, and the elderly, to safer locations. Senior police and administrative officers were present on the spot to coordinate the rescue.
Eyewitnesses praised the BSF’s bravery and quick response, calling it a “lifesaving mission that prevented a major tragedy.” Villagers expressed gratitude to the security forces for risking their lives to ensure the safety of civilians.
Meanwhile, authorities have issued a high alert in low-lying areas along the Chenab River as water levels continue to rise. Rescue and relief teams have been deployed to monitor the situation and provide immediate assistance.
This BSF rescue operation in Akhnoor highlights not only the challenges posed by natural disasters in Jammu & Kashmir but also the unwavering commitment of India’s security forces in safeguarding lives.
