CDS General Anil Chauhan Took Charge, He Became Second CDS

CDS General Anil Chauhan took charge and said- I will try to fulfill the hopes of the three armies.

Lt Gen Anil Chauhan took charge as the country’s new CDS i.e. Chief Defense Chief on Friday. In this way, Anil Chauhan became the second CDS in the country.

During this, Anupama Chauhan, wife of General Anil Chauhan, was also present in the office of the Chief of Defense Staff.

Earlier, Anil Chauhan reached the War Memorial in Delhi today and paid homage to the martyrs at Amar Jawan Jyoti and War Memorial.

Let us inform you that on Wednesday, the government announced the appointment of Chouhan as CDS.

The post was lying vacant for more than nine months after the death of General Bipin Rawat in a helicopter crash.

During this, CDS General Anil Chauhan said that I am proud to hold the responsibility of the highest rank in the Indian Armed Forces.

As the Chief of Defense Staff, I will try to fulfill the expectations of the three defense forces. We will face and deal with all the challenges and difficulties together.

Let us inform you that CDS General Anil Chauhan along with Army Chief General Manoj Pandey and Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhary met Vice Admiral SN Ghormade and Air Marshal BR Krishna, Vice Chief of the Navy.

At the same time, the three armies gave him a guard of honor.

Who is Anil Chauhan?

Lt. Chauhan (Retd.) is from the same 11 Gorkha Rifles to which the late General Rawat belonged.

He was DGMO during the Balakot air strikes in 2019 when Indian fighter jets destroyed a Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist training camp inside Pakistan in response to the Pulwama terror attack.

Lt Gen Anil Chauhan was born on 18 May 1961 and was commissioned into the 11 Gorkha Rifles of the Indian Army in 1981.

In his career spanning over 40 years, Lt Gen Anil Chauhan has held several command, staff, and important positions and has vast experience in counter-terrorism operations in J&K and the Northeast.

Retired last year

Lt Gen Chauhan retired in May last year. At that time he was serving as the Eastern Army Commander.

As Eastern Army Commander, he was instrumental in strengthening India’s overall combat preparedness along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim regions.

He is an alumnus of the National Defense Academy, Khadakwasla, and the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun.

In the rank of Major General, he commanded an infantry division in the crucial Baramulla sector in the Northern Command.

Later as a lieutenant general, Chouhan commanded a corps in the Northeast and became the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command from September 2019 until his retirement in May 2021.

Apart from these command appointments, he also held important positions including the charge of Director General, Military Operations.

Prior to this he also served in the United Nations Mission in Angola. Even after retiring, he continued to contribute to national security and strategic affairs.

Rawat took command in 2020.

On January 1, 2020, General Rawat took over as India’s first CDS to bring uniformity in the functioning of the Army, Navy, and Indian Air Force and enhance the country’s overall military prowess.

Another major objective of Rawat was to facilitate the reorganization of military commands, including the establishment of theater commands.

He has been honored with many posts.

For distinguished and remarkable service in the Army, Lt Gen Anil Chauhan (Retd) has been awarded Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal.

General Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat, and 12 others were killed in a helicopter crash on December 8 last year and the post of CDS was vacant since then.
