SC on Sedition Law The Supreme Court on Monday adjourned the hearing on the petitions challenging the sedition law.

The main reason for the adjournment of the hearing was the Centre’s submission that it was in the final stages of review of the penal provision under Section 124A of the IPC.

While making the arguments, the Center also challenged the constitutional validity of the penal provision.

Venkataramani, appearing for the Centre, said the consultation process is at an advanced stage and will be shown to the Supreme Court before it goes to Parliament.

He also urged the court to drop the matter for further hearing after parliamentary sessions during the rainy season.

It is believed that the government may propose a change in the law after the monsoon session, for which it has sought time from the court.

The next hearing will be in August.

Chief Justice D. Y. Chandrachood and J. B. Pardiwala took note of the announcement made by Attorney General R. Venkataramani that the government had begun the process of amending Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The court brought the matter to the fore in the second week of August.

It calls for the formation of a panel of seven judges.

At the start of the hearing, senior attorney Gopal Sankaranarayan asked the court to set up a bench of seven judges to decide the matter.

The judicial panel said that even if seven judges tried the case, it should first be referred to a panel of five judges.

In a landmark order on May 11 last year, the Supreme Court had put on hold the penal law on sedition till it was re-examined by an “appropriate” government panel.

With this, the court directed the Center and the states not to register any new case of sedition till then.
