Chief Justice Bobde Recommended Name Of Justice NV Ramana

Chief Justice Bobde recommended the name of Justice NV Ramana for the next CJI of the country.

Justice NV Ramana will be the 48th Chief Justice of the country. The current Chief Justice of India SA Bobde has recommended the name NV Ramanake as his successor.

Justice Ramana is the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court after CJI Bobde. CJI Bobde is due to retire on April 23 before he sent a recommendation for the name of Justice Ramna to the government.

Recently, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had asked the CJI to recommend the name of his successor in this regard.

As per the norms, the CJI is to be given the name of the next CJI one month before the retirement of the Chief Justice.

Justice Ramana is to take charge as the next Chief Justice of India on 24 April. Justice Ramana has a term as a judge in the Supreme Court till August 26, 2022.

Under the standard procedure, the Chief Justice is appointed on the basis of seniority in the Supreme Court. Judge Bobde was sworn in as the 47th Chief Justice of the country on 18 November 2019.

Maharashtra’s Maratha reservation law constitutional, the right of states to make laws on the reservation is not abolished.

The central government on Tuesday, in the Supreme Court, acknowledging the legislative power of the state governments to make laws regarding the reservation.

Govt said that the 102nd amendment of the Constitution does not abolish the authority of the states. The Center also said that the Maratha Reservation Act of Maharashtra is constitutional.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said- SEBC Act of Maharashtra is constitutional.

A five-judge constitution bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan is hearing the Maratha quota. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Center in front of the bench, said that the SEBC Act of Maharashtra (the law providing reservation to Marathas) is constitutional.

The court has asked many questions and sought answers from the Center about the constitutional amendment and not releasing the list of backward according to it. On this, Mehta said to file a written reply.

States raised questions on the reservation, urged to send the matter to the 11-member bench.

Several states also debated before the bench. The states opposed the maximum reservation limit of 50 percent.

The states said that the 50 percent limit is not the Lakshman Rekha. The Indira Sawhney verdict setting the boundaries should be sent to a bench of 11 judges for reconsideration.
