China will soon be a bigger nuclear threat than Russia, says senior US military official.

China is rapidly building nuclear weapons. Given this, China would soon overtake Russia as the United States’ top nuclear threat.

A senior US military official warned on Friday that the two countries have no mechanisms to prevent miscommunication.

US Air Force Lieutenant General Thomas Buseyre is the deputy commander of the US Strategic Command. He oversees the country’s nuclear arsenal.

He said China’s public assertion that it wants to maintain a minimum nuclear deterrence capability cannot be relied upon, given the development of its nuclear capabilities.

Buseyrer’s remarks come as the United States is attempting to realign its foreign policy to place greater emphasis in the Indo-Pacific region to counter China’s growing economic and military might.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed deep concern over China’s nuclear arsenal during a meeting with foreign ministers of Asian countries and partner countries in early August.

The think-tank report, based on satellite imagery, says China is building hundreds of new silos for nuclear missiles and Washington has accused Beijing of opposing nuclear weapons talks.

China says its arsenal is smaller than that of the United States and Russia and is open to talks, but only if Washington reduces its nuclear stockpile to the level of China.

According to a State Department fact sheet, the United States had 1,357 nuclear weapons deployed as of March 1.

China’s progress in missile technology to deliver those weapons is also of concern to the United States. Bussiere said China had tested more ballistic missile capabilities last year than the rest of the world.
