Congress Has Sealed The Alliance With The DMK In Tamil Nadu

Congress has sealed the alliance with the DMK in Tamil Nadu. Know how many seats came in the share of Congress in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, the DMK has a heavyweight.

The Congress, which is considering the alliance as essential to deal with political challenges, has sealed the alliance with the DMK in Tamil Nadu, despite not getting the requisite seats.

Under the agreement with the DMK, Congress will contest only 25 of the 234 assembly seats in the state. This is the lowest number of seats in the Congress account in the last two decades of alliance with the DMK.

Apart from this, the DMK has also decided to support the Congress candidate in the Kanyakumari Lok Sabha by-election.

Tamil Nadu Congress in-charge of Dinesh Gundurao and state Congress president KS Alagiri on Sunday announced an agreement on seat sharing after meeting DMK chief MK Stalin in Chennai.

The Tamil Nadu Congress was not ready for an alliance on such a small number of seats, and in the last two-three days, Alagiri had called the proposal of seats disrespectful to the Congress till the alliance broke down.

But the Congress high command sent a sentiment to the state leaders Instead of flowing in, Delhi-based leaders explained the importance of defeating the BJP in the current political challenge.

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi himself spoke to Alagiri on Saturday and explained not to argue with the DMK over the number of seats.

Alagiri and Gundurao also said after the agreement with the DMK that the coalition should not be viewed according to the number of seats, but with a view to strengthening the fight against the country’s secular structure and the attack on democracy.

The DMK had initially proposed 18 seats to Congress and after much effort, it was increased to 22 and then set a final limit of 25 seats. At the same time, Congress has assured a seat in the Rajya Sabha next year.

The Tamil Nadu Congress President also confirmed this, saying that in June 2022, six seats of Rajya Sabha will be vacated from the state, out of which Stalin has promised to give one seat to the Congress.

The DMK gave Congress 41 seats under the alliance in the last assembly elections in the state. Its number of seats has decreased by 16 as compared to the last time.

The Kanyakumari Lok Sabha seat was of the Congress account anyway and its MP Vasant Kumar died last year from Corona.

In this context, on the assurance of a future Rajya Sabha seat, the Congress alliance agreed to such a small number of seats.

The DMK chief Stalin, despite taking more seats in the alliance with the RJD in Bihar, made it clear that given the political reality in Tamil Nadu, he would give it fewer seats in view of the political reality.
