After giving a big blow to the Congress in Karnataka, senior party leader and former minister Pramod Madhavraj joined the BJP.
Madhavaraj, who was recently made the vice-president of Karnataka Congress, resigned from the primary membership of the party earlier in the day.
Within hours, he joined the BJP in the presence of Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai. Many other leaders have also joined BJP with him.
According to the media, there was speculation about Madhavraj’s resignation for the past several days.
Congress had also given him the post of Vice President in Karnataka Congress to persuade him, but despite this, he left the party by writing a letter to Karnataka Congress President DK Shivakumar.
Madhavraj belongs to the Udupi district and has also been a cabinet minister in the previous Siddaramaiah government.
At that time he had the departments of Fisheries, Youth Empowerment, and Sports.
Madhavraj, in his resignation letter to Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar, had written, “I have decided not to accept the post of state vice-president.
Apart from this, I am also giving my resignation from the primary membership of the Congress party.
This makes me feel politically suffocated. I had brought this matter to your notice earlier also. Along with this, other leaders of the party were also told about this.
But I realized that no meaningful step was taken by the party to address my grievances regarding the condition of the Udupi District Congress.
According to the media report, 54-year-old Pramod Madhavraj belongs to a family that has been MLA from Udupi Legislative Assembly six times.
Pramod’s father Malpe Madhavraj became MLA from Udupi for the first time in 1962 on a Congress ticket.
After that, his mother Manorama reached the assembly from here four times from 1972 to 1989. Manorama was also a minister for 15 years.
After becoming an MP from Udupi in 2004, he joined the BJP.
Pramod Madhavraj was the sitting MLA of Udupi in 2013, he became MLA by defeating Raghupati Bhat. Then he was also made a cabinet minister in the state government.
Pramod Madhavraj had also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for honoring Vishvesha Teertha Swami while in Congress last year.
He had also said that since the BJP came to power at the Center, there has been a change in the way Padma awards are given.
