Demand for re-determination of minority status of Muslims and Christians in Kerala pleads to High Court.
A petition has been filed in the High Court on Thursday for re-evaluation of the minority status of Muslim and Christian society in Kerala.
In this, the court has been urged to direct the Center to re-evaluate whether Muslim and Christian communities should still be kept on the list of minorities in Kerala.
Justice S. Manikumar and Justice Shaji P. Chali, after hearing the arguments of the petitioner organization Citizens Association for Democracy, Equality, Tranquility, and Secularism (CADETS), said that it will pass an order on the issue.
Advocates C. Rajendran and K. Vijayan said the list of minorities in Kerala should be rescheduled. The lawyers sought direction from the court to the National Commission for Minorities to do the same.
The organization claims that the Muslim and Christian communities in Kerala have made considerable progress in the field of social, economic, and education.
Demand for re-determination of minority status of Muslims and Christians: The minority status should be re-determined and not given priority.
The petition has also sought an order from the commission to evaluate the process of development of both the communities.
This petition has been filed at a time when the Union Government recently told the Supreme Court that welfare schemes being run for religious minority communities are legally valid.
The government said that these schemes are focused on reducing inequality. These schemes do not violate the rights of Hindus or other communities.
The government had also said that the welfare schemes focused on reducing inequality among minority communities and improving the quality of education.
In the affidavit filed by the Central Government, it was also said that the schemes are not against the principles of equality enshrined in the Constitution.
