Despite Strong Case, Mehul Choksi Escaped From Being Caught

Despite strong case, Mehul Choksi escaped from being caught, weak law or lapse.

Diamond trader Mehul Choksi, who fled abroad by defrauding Punjab National Bank (PNB) to the tune of thousands of crores, escaped from India’s grip.

An Indian team had reached there by a chartered plane, carrying a bundle of evidence against Choksi, who was caught in the Caribbean country of Dominica, so that he could be brought to India.

Now that this matter has been postponed for the time being, many questions are being raised.

Choksi has been given some time to be brought to India from the court of Dominica. Choksi is wanted along with his nephew Nirav Modi in connection with the Rs 13,500 crore fraud with PNB.

There was a strong case against Choksi, despite this, the court in Dominica has postponed the case and the date of the next hearing is not yet fixed.

According to media reports, Choksi’s lawyers along with opposition parties were successful in putting pressure on the judiciary.

Instead of entering Dominica illegally from Antigua, the court accepted the plea of lawyers that Choksi was abducted and brought there.

Whereas, the evidence shows that Choksi was all set to flee to Cuba. Choksi is currently a citizen of Antigua and Barbuda. He was arrested last week for illegally entering Dominica from Antigua.

The Indian government is trying to bring him back.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh said – need for strong international cooperation against fugitive economic offenders.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh has said that the world is currently facing serious emerging challenges of fugitive economic offenders.

He emphasized the need for strong and organized international cooperation to extradite these criminals to their countries.

In a special session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Singh said that the accused take refuge in other countries and keep away under the guise of complicated legal process there.

The loopholes and weaknesses in international cooperation in this area are exploited by these criminals.

This statement of the Union Minister is also more important because India is fighting a legal battle in other countries to bring home fugitive economic offenders like Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi.

Choksi and Modi, wanted in the Rs 13,500 crore fraud with Punjab National Bank, fled the country in 2018.
