Diwali Travel 2025
Diwali Travel 2025: Indian Railways has announced 1,126 special trains to manage the heavy rush during Diwali and Chhath 2025. Check routes, booking tips, and travel hacks to avoid last-minute hassles.
As the festive season approaches, Indian Railways has unveiled a massive travel plan to ensure smooth passenger movement during Diwali and Chhath 2025. To tackle the annual surge of festival travel, the Railways will operate 1,126 special trains connecting major cities, towns, and regional hubs across the country.
The move comes in response to the high demand witnessed every year during October–November when families travel back to their hometowns or religious destinations. These special trains are expected to cater to millions of passengers and reduce overcrowding on regular routes.
According to Indian Railways, the trains will run on high-demand routes, including:
Delhi–Patna, Delhi–Lucknow, Delhi–Varanasi (North India’s busiest festival routes)
Mumbai–Gorakhpur, Mumbai–Varanasi, Mumbai–Patna (to manage the heavy migrant rush)
Kolkata–Delhi, Kolkata–Patna, Kolkata–Mumbai (for Chhath festival travel)
Southern and Western corridors, such as Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Pune, also feature prominently in the schedule.
The Railways has assured that special trains will have additional coaches wherever possible, focusing on Sleeper and AC classes to maximize capacity.
Booking for these special trains is already open both online via IRCTC and at station counters.
Travelers are advised to book tickets early as seats on these routes tend to sell out within hours.
Tatkal tickets and dynamic quota adjustments will be in place to handle last-minute demand.
Railways also recommends using the official NTES (National Train Enquiry System) app for real-time train status and route information.
Book smartly: Look for connecting trains instead of waiting for a single direct option.
Use alternate stations: Cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata have multiple terminals — check all options for availability.
Plan return tickets: The Chhath festival travel season (especially in Bihar and UP) sees equally high demand for return journeys.
Travel light: With crowded platforms expected, carrying minimal luggage ensures easier movement.
Every year, festival travel chaos dominates headlines, with images of overcrowded trains, long queues, and stranded passengers. The announcement of over 1,100 special trains signals Indian Railways’ proactive approach to easing congestion and ensuring smoother festive journeys.
Officials have emphasized that special teams will monitor operations during the peak season, with additional staff deployed for crowd management at busy stations, including New Delhi, Mumbai CST, Howrah, Lucknow, and Patna Junction.
With Diwali and Chhath being the biggest travel seasons in India, this announcement is a welcome relief for passengers. Those planning to travel are urged to book early, double-check schedules, and keep travel apps handy to avoid last-minute stress.
