Dominica magistrate court shocks Mehul Choksi, bail plea rejected, will appeal in the upper court.

A magistrate court in Dominica has rejected the bail plea of ​​PNB scam accused and fugitive diamond merchant Mehul Choksi in the case of illegal entry into the country.

Diamond trader Mehul Choksi was produced in a magistrate’s court to answer charges of illegal entry into the country following the order of the High Court of Dominica.

Choksi’s lawyer Vijay Aggarwal said that he will now move to the higher court. Earlier, Choksi’s lawyer had claimed that he was abducted from Antigua and Barbuda and forcibly brought to the Caribbean country.

His client does not feel safe in police custody and is sent back to Antigua and Barbuda. A team of officers from various agencies, led by a Deputy Inspector General of CBI, is present in Dominica to bring Choksi to India.

Mehul Choksi’s case was brought before the court on Monday. After deliberating for more than three hours, the court had adjourned the habeas corpus application till 9 am on Thursday.

During the hearing, Dominican Judge Bernie Stephenson said the fugitive businessman would have to answer charges of illegal entry into Dominica in a magistrate’s court.

It is worth mentioning that diamond merchant Mehul Choksi had gone missing from Antigua after going out for dinner on the night of 23 May.

Choksi was living there as a citizen since 2018. He was later detained for illegally entering neighboring Dominica. Choksi is wanted in India in the Punjab National Bank fraud case worth Rs 13,500 crore.

In the case of fugitive Mehul Choksi, who defrauded Indian banks of more than 15 thousand crore rupees, the ongoing hearing in the court of Dominica was postponed till Thursday.

The government of Dominica urged the court to dismiss the habeas corpus petition filed by Choksi. Choksi, on the other hand, says that he was abducted and forcibly brought to the Caribbean island nation.

Dominica High Court ordered Choksi to tell the magistrate how he came to Dominica.

Dominica’s High Court ordered that Choksi be produced before a magistrate’s court to answer charges of illegal entry into the country. According to local media, the hearing was adjourned till Thursday.

The prosecution said – Choksi’s habeas corpus petition is not valid.

During the hearing, the prosecution said that Choksi’s habeas corpus petition was not tenable as he had entered the country illegally and was later taken into custody.
