Dussehra 2025: Celebrations Across India
Dussehra 2025 was celebrated with grandeur across India, but heavy rain disrupted festivities in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and other states. Chaos erupted at JNU while Kota set a record with the world’s tallest Ravana effigy.
Dussehra, the festival symbolizing the victory of good over evil, was celebrated with great enthusiasm across India. From the burning of Ravana effigies to grand processions, Vijayadashami brought together millions of devotees. However, this year’s celebrations were overshadowed by heavy rainfall, political drama, and unique records, making it one of the most talked-about Dussehra festivals in recent years.
In the national capital, celebrations were severely disrupted due to sudden showers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to attend the grand Ravana Dahan organized by the Indraprastha Ramlila Committee, but the event was cancelled. Similarly, Home Minister Amit Shah could not attend the Pitampura celebrations. Rain left many effigies soaked, delaying or even cancelling several events.
At Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), the Dussehra event turned controversial. Effigies of Ravana were decorated with the faces of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, both accused in the Delhi riots conspiracy case. Allegedly, ABVP accused left-wing students of throwing shoes during the Ravana Dahan, leading to chaos and disruption. The incident quickly went viral on social media, sparking political debates.
Despite weather challenges, several states celebrated Dussehra with zeal:
Uttar Pradesh: In Varanasi, effigies of Ravana, Meghnad, and Kumbhakarna were set aflame, while CM Yogi Adityanath performed rituals at Gorakhnath Temple.
Bihar: Gandhi Maidan in Patna showcased an 80-foot Ravana, though rain damaged its head before it was set on fire.
Jharkhand: CM Hemant Soren attended Ravana Dahan in Ranchi, where thousands braved the rain to participate.
West Bengal & Jammu-Kashmir: Celebrations continued despite the downpour, with huge effigies lit amid cheers.
In Haryana, several effigies could not be burnt as they were drenched. In Bahadurgarh, one effigy was toppled and then ignited. In Panchkula, CM Nayab Singh Saini faced embarrassment as the remote to ignite Ravana malfunctioned. In Uttarakhand, soaked effigies required petrol to be burnt, while in Haridwar and Rudrapur, effigies fell due to strong winds before being repaired and set alight again.
In Srinagar, Dussehra was celebrated at the Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium, where PDP leader Iltija Mufti participated. In Ujjain, devotees thronged the Jyotirlinga Mahakal Temple as Lord Mahakal’s silver palanquin procession worshipped the sacred Shami tree.
The highlight of this year’s Dussehra was from Kota, Rajasthan, where the world’s tallest 221-foot Ravana effigy was set ablaze. Crafted over four months, weighing 13,000 kilograms and costing ₹4.4 million, the massive effigy featured a 25-foot fiberglass face and a 60-foot crown adorned with vibrant lights.
According to officials, this spectacular feat will be recorded in the India Book of Records and the Asia Book of Records.
Dussehra 2025 will be remembered not just for its devotional spirit and grandeur but also for the unexpected disruptions caused by rain, political controversies at JNU, and the world record-breaking effigy in Kota. Despite challenges, the festival once again reinforced the age-old message of the triumph of good over evil.
