External Affairs Minister Jaishankar to chair UNSC meeting today on the impact of terrorism on international peace and security.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will today chair a high-level meeting of the United Nations Security Council on threats to international peace and security due to terrorist acts.

Let us tell you that India has become the President of the Security Council for the month of August.

The External Affairs Minister was already scheduled to chair high-level meetings at the UNSC on August 18 and 19.

Does India have any dialogue with the Taliban?

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar was asked during the ongoing UNSC meetings in New York whether India had any dialogue with the Taliban in the recent past.

To this, he said, ‘At this point of time, we are seeing what is the situation in Kabul. Obviously, the Taliban and its representatives have come to Kabul.

So we will look at the strategy going forward. The External Affairs Minister further said that at this time we are following the developments in Afghanistan very carefully.

Our focus is on ensuring security in Afghanistan and the safe return of Indian nationals.

Indian investment in Afghanistan will guide.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar at the UNSC in New York said, “For us, it (Indian investments in Afghanistan) reflects what our historical ties with the Afghan people were.

This relationship with the Afghan people clearly continues. This will guide our approach towards Afghanistan in the days to come.

The first program scheduled for Wednesday, 18 August, was on ‘Protecting the Guardians:

Technology and Peacekeeping’, while the second program on 19 August will be a high-level meeting on ‘threat to international peace and security due to terrorists’.

Let us tell that this meeting is going to take place when the Taliban captured Kabul on Sunday and also made their place in the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had said in a press release that both these subjects are priorities for India during the UNSC meetings.

Jaishankar arrived in New York on Monday to chair two high-level meetings of the UN Security Council on UN peacekeeping and terrorism.

On Tuesday, Jaishankar met UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and discussed Afghanistan.

On Wednesday, as part of the United Nations Security Council program, there was an open debate on Protecting the Guardians: Technology and Peacekeeping.

In this open debate, S Jaishankar said that India is supporting the United Nations in the rollout of the Unite Aware platform.

In the meeting, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that he is happy to share that India is supporting the United Nations in the rollout of the Unite Aware platform.

This initiative is based on the expectation that a complete peacekeeping operation can be visualized, coordinated, and monitored on a real-time basis.

He further said that technical improvements should be made continuously, also ensuring that any attack on civilians can be anticipated, prevented, or acted upon immediately.

S Jaishankar told the meeting that in March this year, the Indian government had provided 2,00,000 COVID-19 vaccines to UN peacekeeping personnel across the world.

Peacekeeping continues to play an important role in India’s approach to international peace and security.
