Football diary: West Ham hopes to make it to the top four, Stevia lost to Athletic.
With two goals from Michael Antonio, West Ham beat Burnley 2–1 in the English Premier League (EPL) football competition, hoping to qualify for the Uefa Champions League for the first time.
Chris Wood converted a penalty in the 19th minute to give Burnley an edge, but Antonio scored in the 21st and 29th minutes to give West Ham a crucial win.
The win brings West Ham to 58 points from 34 matches, just three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.
West Ham is yet to face lower-ranked teams such as Brighton, West Brom, and Southampton in addition to Everton, while Chelsea faces strong teams such as Manchester City, Arsenal, Leicester, and Aston Villa.
Another match played between West Brom and the Wolves drew 1–1. Fabio Silva scored in the first half’s injury time to give the Wolves an edge. Mabey Diagne scored an equalizer from West Brom in the 62nd minute.
Football diary: Athletic lost to Stevia
Madrid, ep. Sevilla’s hopes of winning the Spanish Football League La Liga title have come as a shock as they lost 1–0 to Athletic Bilbao.
Sevilla is still six points behind top-ranked Atletico Madrid and Monday’s win could have included them among the four strong contenders.
Real Madrid and Barcelona are also strong contenders for the title and are just two points behind Atletico Madrid.
When it seemed that the match would end in a goalless draw, Inaki Williams broke Athletic’s hopes of getting closer to the top team by scoring the winning goal for Athletic in the 90th minute.
Stevia still holds a 17 point lead over fifth-ranked team Real Sociedad and has secured their place in the Champions League for the next season. Athletic has finished ninth and is still a contender for a place in the Europa League.
Football diary: The Indian team will participate in the women’s club championship pilot tournament.
New Delhi The All India Football Federation (AIFF) said on Tuesday that an Indian team will participate in the AFC Women’s Club Championship 2021 to be held later this year.
The champions of the Indian Women’s League will play in this eight-team pilot tournament of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
The tournament will be played between 30 October to 4 November this year.
Group-A (East) will comprise Chinese Taipei, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam, and Group-B (West) will comprise teams from India, Iran, Jordan, and Uzbekistan.
AIFF Secretary-General Kushal Das said, “We will host two international competitions AFC Women’s Asian Cup and FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup 2022.
Earlier, India’s participation in the club championship would give a new direction to women’s football in India.
