Hearing On Objectionable Speech Case In Haridwar

Hearing on objectionable speech case in Haridwar Dharma Sansad, SC sent notice to Uttarakhand and Delhi government.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday heard a petition seeking an independent inquiry into the speeches of Haridwar Dharma Sansad that allegedly incited violence against the minority community.

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana has issued notices to the Uttarakhand and Delhi governments in this matter.

Earlier on Monday, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the petitioner, had mentioned the matter for urgent hearing before the bench.

Hearing on objectionable speech case: The petition was filed by former High Court judge and senior advocate Anjana Prakash and journalist Kurban Ali.

The petition demanded the arrest and trial of those who made inflammatory speeches inciting violence against Muslims at the Haridwar Dharma Sansad Sammelan.

Sibal, appearing for the petitioners, said that the slogan of the country seems to be changed from ‘Satyamev Jayate’ to ‘Shastramev Jayate’.

Referring to the matter, Sibal told the apex court, “We are living in very dangerous times where slogans in the country have changed from Satyamev Jayate to Shastramev Jayate.”

Sibal said an FIR has been registered in the matter but no arrest has been made.

Hate speeches were reportedly delivered by Yeti Narasimhanand in Haridwar and ‘Hindu Yuva Vahini’ in Delhi between December 17 and 19, 2021.

The plea alleged that the alleged hate speeches were open calls to ethnic genocide.

The petition further said, it is important to note that the said speeches are not merely hate speech, but an open call for the killing of an entire community.

Thus the said speeches pose a serious threat to the unity and integrity of our country.

It further said that it is pertinent to note that no action has been taken by Uttarakhand and Delhi Police with respect to the event organized there.

Despite the fact that hate speeches for genocide are present on the internet.
