Controversy continues to escalate after the arrest of journalist Arnab Goswami in a case of abetment to suicide.

While it is being called a major attack on the freedom of the press, questions are being raised on the entire action of the police in this matter.

Questions are arising because this case has been reopened. Last year in 2019, the Maharashtra Police closed the case saying that they did not get enough evidence.

It is worth mentioning that on 5 May 2018, an interior designer Anvay Naik had committed suicide in Alibag, Maharashtra, his mother was also found dead in the house.

There are allegations against journalist Arnab Goswami that he did not pay the interior designer’s money and forced him to commit suicide.

The Editors Guild of India condemned the arrest of Arnab Goswami, saying that state power should not be used against critical reporting.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah compared the incident to the Emergency, calling it an attack on the fourth pillar of democracy.

There is no doubt that no one, including journalists, is above the law, but the Maharashtra government cannot use the law to take revenge. This type of police action with a journalist is strangling the voice of democracy.
