The reigning Commonwealth Games champion Lakshya Sen lost to HS Prannoy in the men’s singles pre-quarterfinals of the World Championships.

Prannoy defeated young sensation Sen 17-21, 21-16, 21-17 in a very tough contest.

19-year-old Lakshya Sen was hoping for gold at the World Championships but compatriot Prannoy defeated him to enter the quarter-finals. Now it is Prannoy’s responsibility to bring the gold.

Olympic bronze medalist Saina Nehwal crashed out of the women’s singles pre-quarterfinals, losing to Busanan Ongbamrungphan after putting up a tough fight.

The 32 Indian players lost 17-21 21-16 13-21 to opponent Thailand. With this win, Busanan’s winning record against Saina has gone up to 5-3.

The pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty reached the next round. The pair of Satwik and Chirag beat Denmark’s Jeppa Bay and Lasse Molhede 21-12 21-10 in 35 minutes.

They will now face the second-seeded pair of Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi of Japan in the quarterfinals.

Busanan took an 11-3 lead in the opening game, putting Saina under pressure. Although the Indian player reduced this gap to 17-19, the Thai player easily won the first game.

However, a comeback at the end of the first game gave Saina confidence and the former number one went 11-7 at the break. He played aggressively and took the match to the deciding game.

In the third game, both the players gave tough competition to each other. But Busanan started gaining momentum and took a five-point lead.

On the other hand, Saina continued to lag behind and 26-year-old Busanan secured her quarterfinal spot with seven match points.

India’s Dhruv Kapila and MR Arjun reached the quarterfinals of the Badminton World Championship by defeating Terry Hee and Loh Keen Heen.

India’s unseeded pair won 18-21, 21-15, and 21-16 in a thrilling encounter that lasted 58 minutes.

Now they will face Indonesia’s Mohammad Asan and Hendra Setiawan.

Kapila and Arjun had defeated eighth seed and previous bronze medalists Kim Astrup and Anders Skarup Rasmussen of Denmark in the second round.
