India Called For Chemical Weapons Investigation: UNSC

India called for chemical weapons investigation, UNSC unleashed over WMD in terrorists’ hands. India on Thursday called for a purposeful investigation into the alleged use of chemical weapons.

It also urged the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to take cognizance of the dangers of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in the hands of terrorist groups.

India also urged countries not to associate humanitarian and development assistance with politics. India said this in the Joint Security Council meeting on Syria.

Speaking at the UN Security Council, Ravindra, India’s permanent deputy representative to the United Nations, said that the activities of terrorist groups, particularly ISIS, in the region have increased.

Therefore, the Council should take cognizance of the weapons of mass destruction falling in the hands of terrorist groups.

At the same time, he said that through dialogue with the Syrian leadership, we call for a comprehensive and peaceful resolution of the conflict in Syria keeping in mind the legitimate aspirations of the people here.

Ravindra, India’s permanent deputy representative to the United Nations, further said that India has helped Syria through humanitarian aid and human resource development.

India has provided one million US Dollars to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Trust Fund for activities related to the destruction of chemical weapons in Syria.

He also said that continued cooperation between Syria and the OPCW Technical Secretariat is important for the speedy resolution of all pending issues.

America said – Russia is becoming a hindrance.

The US on Thursday accused Syrian President Bashar Assad and his close Russia of trying to block attempts to hold Damascus accountable for using chemical weapons during attacks on civilians.

US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield told the UN Security Council that the Assad regime has tried to hinder independent investigations and avoid accountability by undermining the role and work of the OPCW.
