India Is Moving Ahead On The Path Shown By Visvesvaraya

India is moving ahead on the path shown by Visvesvaraya: Engineers Day 2021.

The path of development shown by Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, India is moving ahead on the same path. Bharat Ratna Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was an erudite engineer.

Engineer’s Day is celebrated to commemorate the birthday of Visvesvaraya, born on 15 September 1861 in Chikkaballapur, Karnataka.

Due to the death of his father at a young age, his family had to face a financial crisis, but Visvesvaraya continued his hard work. Impressed by his merit, the princely state of Mysore gave him a scholarship.

In the year 1883, he secured the first position in LCE and FCE examinations which are currently considered equivalent to BE degree.

Seeing his merit, the Government of Maharashtra appointed him as an Assistant Engineer in Nashik district.

As an engineer, Visvesvaraya got fame for increasing the water storage level of dams without increasing the height of the Khadagwasla Dam in Pune.

Visvesvaraya had used automatic water gates only at Khadagwasla dam. In the year 1909, he was appointed as the Chief Engineer of Mysore State.

Visvesvaraya played the role of Chief Engineer in the construction of Krishnaraja Sagar Dam. It was not so easy to build this dam, because then cement was not made in the country.

Still, Visvesvaraya did not give up. He worked with engineers to develop a mortar that was stronger than cement. This dam is located in the state of Karnataka.

At that time it was reputed as the largest dam in Asia, measuring 2621 meters in length and 39 meters in height.

Today, about 1.25 lakh acres of land is irrigated in all the regions of Karnataka by the 45-km-long Visvesvaraya Canal and many other canals from the Krishnaraja Sagar Dam.

The Krishnaraja Sagar Dam, which produces electricity as well as supplies drinking water to cities like Mysuru and Bangalore, is a testament to the success of Visvesvaraya’s technical prowess and administrative planning.

He was also noted for the exquisite design of Jayanagar in south Bangalore.

Today, whether it is the world’s highest bridge over the Chenab river or the Atal Tunnel to the border areas or a network of accessible highways in the country.

With the creation of such excellent infrastructure, India is moving forward on the path of development shown by Visvesvaraya.

He had done a lot of work on water supply projects in many cities including Kolhapur, Belgaum, Dharwad, Bijapur, Ahmedabad, and Pune in the early part of his career.

Sir Visvesvaraya was instrumental in making the dams, bridges, and drinking water projects on many rivers across the country a complete success.
