India-Syria Relations: 70 Years of Friendship and a Road Named After Nehru

India-Syria Relations: 7 decade-old India-Syria diplomatic relations, a road in Damascus named after Nehru; with India on Kashmir issue. Diplomatic relations between India and Syria were established in 1950. As a result, a road in Damascus is named after the then-Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and it reminds of the friendship between the two countries. There has been an unbreakable relationship between the two nations for decades and it became stronger, especially during Assad’s rule.

Bashar al-Assad visited India

During his 2008 visit to India, Bashar gave presentations on prospects for agricultural cooperation and phosphate research in Syria. India had proposed to set up an IT Focal point of Greatness in Syria. However, the ongoing war in Syria and the removal of Assad from power have raised questions about the future of relations between the two countries.

India-Syria Relations: India adopted a neutral stance

India has advocated a Syrian-led solution and has maintained a neutral stance, stressing the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. India has recently upheld Syria’s Golan Levels guarantee.
