Indian Air Force took another step towards self-reliance, and successfully tested the ‘SAMAR’ air defense missile system in the Astrashakti exercise.

In a breakthrough in its in-house design and development efforts, the Indian Air Force has successfully test-fired its SAMAR air defense missile system.

The IAF has developed the SAMAR air defense missile system using its older Russian-origin air-to-air missile systems.

Test conducted during Astrashakti-2023.

“The Indian Air Force recently conducted a successful firing test of its in-house designed and developed SAMAR air defense missile system during Exercise Astrashakti-2023 held at Air Force Station Surya Lanka,” an IAF official told the news agency.

The air defense system ‘SAMAR’ (Surface-to-Air Missile for Assured Retaliation) has been developed by a unit under the Maintenance Command of the Indian Air Force.

For the first time, the missile system took part in the exercise to test its operational field trials and surface-to-air weapon systems.

He said that the missile system executed test firing objectives in a variety of conditions with outstanding performance.

SAMAR is capable of launching two missiles.

The system can counter air threats with missiles operating at a speed range of Mach 2 to 2.5.

IAF officials said the SAMAR system comprises a twin-turret launch platform capable of launching two missiles in single and salvo modes, depending on the threat scenario.

Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal has already seen the demonstration.

The demonstration of the missile system has already been witnessed by Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari and Vice Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal AP Singh.

Air Marshal Vibhas Pandey, chief of Maintenance Command of the Indian Air Force, also visited the Sri Lankan airport and met the crew including officers and personnel who have worked towards developing the system in-house.

Focus on promoting self-reliance.

The Indian Air Force also conducted successful missile firing on other weapon systems and achieved significant success.

The Indian Air Force is working as per the instructions of the Narendra Modi government to promote self-reliance.

The Maintenance Command has also achieved significant success in indigenizing many spares and equipment used in fighter aircraft, transport aircraft, helicopters, and ground-based weapon systems.

The base repair depots of the force are also working closely with HAL to improve the serviceability of the Su-30 and MiG-29 jets in the force, among others. SAMAR air defense system has been developed by 7 BRD based in the national capital.
