India’s defense preparedness is entering a new phase as the Indian Army is set to receive a cutting-edge indigenous Anti-Drone System designed to neutralize enemy drones from up to 2 kilometers away. This technological advancement comes at a time when the use of drones for cross-border surveillance and attacks has increased significantly. The new capability will substantially enhance the Army’s response to aerial threats, especially along sensitive border regions.

According to defense officials, both the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force have placed orders for 16 units of the next-generation Drone Detection and Interdiction System, developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO). These systems are designed to detect, track, and disable hostile drones with precision.

Indian Army to Get Indigenous Anti-Drone System: A Major Upgrade in India’s Anti-Drone Capability

The highlight of this indigenous system is its powerful 10-kilowatt laser beam, which allows the Army to shoot down enemy drones from twice the previous range. Earlier, the Mark-1 variant of the system was equipped with a two-kilowatt beam capable of neutralizing threats only within one kilometer. The enhanced model marks a significant leap in India’s defensive capabilities.

This development comes in the backdrop of increasing drone activity across the border. During Pakistan’s Operation Sindoor, a large number of drones were deployed for surveillance and infiltration activities. These incidents pushed Indian defense forces to accelerate the deployment of reliable counter-drone technologies.

The upgraded Mark 2 Integrated Drone Detection and Interdiction System, designed and refined by DRDO, is now awaiting final approval from the Ministry of Defence. Once cleared, the Indian Army will begin integrating these systems into active service across key locations.

DRDO Moves Toward Long-Range Laser Weapons

DRDO is aggressively enhancing India’s long-range drone interception capabilities. As part of this pursuit, DRDO has successfully tested a Direct Energy Weapon System capable of disabling drones and small aerial platforms from a range of 5 kilometers. This system works by overheating and damaging drone components, causing them to lose control and crash.

Furthermore, India recently tested a 30-kilowatt laser-based weapon system, placing the country among a select group of nations that possess high-energy laser weapon technology. Until now, such advanced systems were limited to technologically advanced military powers like the United States, China, and Russia.

How the Laser-Based Anti-Drone System Works

The anti-drone system uses a high-energy laser to target vulnerable components of enemy drones, such as their motors, control units, or batteries. When focused on a drone, the laser generates intense heat capable of melting plastic frames, burning wiring, or damaging electronic components. This results in the drone becoming non-functional and crashing to the ground.

The system operates with high precision and causes minimal collateral damage, making it ideal for urban, border, and sensitive defense zones where traditional interception methods may pose risks.

Along with laser systems, DRDO is also developing other high-energy technologies intended for future battlefield use. These include:

  1. High-energy microwave weapons
  2. Electromagnetic pulse (EMP) devices
  3. Advanced electronic warfare systems

These technologies are expected to provide India with a multi-layered defense shield against emerging aerial threats, including swarm drones.
