Justice Uday Umesh Lalit took oath as the Chief Justice of India on Saturday at Rashtrapati Bhavan in the presence of President Draupadi Murmu.
He is the 49th Chief Justice of India. Justice NV Ramana’s term as CJI ended on 26 August. President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to Justice Lalit as CJI.
During this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and other dignitaries were present in Rashtrapati Bhavan.
As the 49th Chief Justice of the country, he will head the Supreme Court for only 74 days.
As CJI, Justice UU Lalit will head the Supreme Court collegium consisting of Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice Hima Kaul, Justice S. Abdul Nazeer, and Justice Indira Banerjee.
With Justice Banerjee retiring on September 23, Justice KM Joseph will enter the collegium. Justice UU Lalit will retire as CJI on November 8.
Justice Lalit is known for his calm and simple nature.
While former CJI Justice NV Ramana has always been in the news for 29 speeches and dozens of remarks during his 16-month tenure, Justice UU makes very few remarks at public events outside the court.
Even in court, only a few of his comments have come to the fore. Justice Lalit does his work by remaining calm.
To maintain respect for justice, he did not take a moment to get away from hearing dozens of important cases. He also withdrew his name from the hearing of the historic Ayodhya.Babri case.
Justice Lalit’s family has been associated with law and justice
Justice Lalit’s association with the field of justice and law was made with his birth. Because they have been in this area from generation to generation.
In a way, it can be said that they have inherited the knowledge of law and justice. Justice Lalit’s grandfather Ranganath Lalit has been a respected lawyer.
This journey was taken a step further by his son RU Lalit and he was appointed a judge of Bombay High Court by his lawyer.
Justice UU Lalit was the third generation lawyer in his family, then became a judge of the Supreme Court and has now reached the post of Chief Justice of the country.
When Justice UR Lalit retired as an additional judge in the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court, Justice UU Lalit was 19 years old and had completed his high school education.
The effect of the inherited advocacy profession was also on Justice UU Lalit and after schooling, he started moving forward on the same path.
He took the admission for LLB in Government Law College, Mumbai.
After getting his law degree in 1983, Justice UU Lalit was registered as a lawyer in the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa in June 1983.
The journey of advocacy that started then has now reached the post of Chief Justice of the country.
