Kashmir Handicrafts: Two Shilp Gurus, six national awards for Kashmiri handicrafts artisans.

Handicraft artisans of Kashmir have once again brought laurels to the valley by winning two Shilp Gurus and six national-level awards in various craft categories.

The award categories were announced for the years 2017, 2018, and 2019. The awards were given in various categories which included Sojani, Paper Mache, and Carpet.

The recipients of the Shilp Guru award include Basheer Ahmad Bhatt resident of Sonpah Beerwah and Iqbal Hussain Khan resident of Ghazi Doorn.

Basheer Ahmed was awarded for the year 2018 in Jamawar Shawl craft and paper mache and Iqbal Hussain Khan in paper mache for the year 2019.

The Shilp Guru Awards were instituted in 2002 to celebrate the golden jubilee of the revival of handicrafts in India.

The award consists of a gold coin, prize money of two lakh rupees, a Tamra Patra, a shawl, and a certificate.

National Award Muzaffar Hussain Khushu resident Kathi Maidan Srinagar (Paper Machi, 2019), Zahoor Ahmed Bhatt resident Shalla Bagh Jadibal (Sojni Embroidery, 2019).

Safdar Ali Mir resident Sonpah Beerwah (Sojni Embroidery, 2018), Parveja Bano resident Kathi Maidan Alamgari Bazar (Sojni Embroidery, 2018).

Akhtar Hussain Rather, Hawal Kral Pora (Paper Machi, 2017) and Ghulam Ali Sheikh, Shahu Sachan Kulgam (Handmade Carpet, Double Sided, 2017).

National Awards are being presented since 1965 for excellent craftsmanship in various craft categories. The award carries prize money of Rs one lakh, a Tamra Patra, a shawl, and a certificate.

The Shilp Guru awards were presented by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and the national-level awards were given away by Union Minister for Textiles, Commerce, and Industry Piyush Goyal at Vigyan Bhawan.

Rachna Shah, Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, Shantmanu, Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, award winners from across India, and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.

Director Handicrafts and Handlooms Kashmir Mehmood Ahmad Shah have congratulated the award winners.

He said that the department is aware of the creative talent available in Sonpah village of Budgam district, as a result of which a DPR has been prepared and submitted to the Government of India to develop the village as a craft village.
