Lashkar Terrorist Appeals In Calcutta HC Against Death Penalty

Lashkar terrorist appeals in Calcutta High Court against the death penalty, presented before High Court from Tihar Jail.

A Lashkar terrorist has appealed in the Calcutta High Court against the death penalty. In 2018, a Bengal court sentenced him to death for waging war against the country.

He was produced before the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday amid tight security from New Delhi’s Tihar Jail for hearing his appeal.

Abdul Naeem alias Sameer Naiya, associated with the terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba, is imprisoned in Delhi’s Tihar Jail.

He was sentenced to death by the Bangaon Court, a lower court in North 24 Parganas district, in December 2018.

Naeem had expressed his willingness to personally present his arguments on his appeal against the district court’s conviction.

He was produced before a division bench of Justice Jayamalya Bagchi and Justice Bibhas Patnaik.

The bench said that in order to enable the convict to effectively argue his appeal before the court, it is necessary that Naeem be kept in Kolkata during the hearing of the appeal.

The bench directed the Director-General of West Bengal Correctional Services and the State Director General of Police to make arrangements for handing over the convict.

During the hearing of the appeal, the convict will be kept under tight security at the Presidency Correctional Home, Kolkata, and will be produced before the court under police protection.

The bench directed that his appeal against the death sentence awarded to Naeem would be heard on May 17.

Arrested by BSF in 2007.

It is noteworthy that in April 2007, BSF arrested four people on suspicion of being members of the terrorist organization and handed them over to the local police, among them was Naeem.

Officials said that the incident took place in the Kistopur area, a border outpost of BSF’s 44th Corps in the Malda district.
