Madras High Court Strict On Tamil Nadu Floods

Madras High Court strict on Tamil Nadu floods said- rain-flood lesson for government officials.

The Madras High Court on Tuesday said that the rains and floods in Tamil Nadu are a lesson for government officials.

The court came down heavily on the Greater Chennai Corporation for the floods caused by incessant torrential rains in the city.

Madras High Court says citizens crave water in the first six months of the year and die in the subsequent months due to water (floods).

Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice PD Odikesavalu made the remarks while disposing of a petition related to encroachment on a lake.

Madras High Court strict on Tamil Nadu floods: What were the officials doing for the last five years after the 2015 floods?

The bench expressed surprise and warned the authorities that it would not hesitate to initiate (contempt) proceedings if the situation did not improve within a week.

The petition had said that the court should order the Ariyalur district administration to vacate the 1.03 hectares occupied by a village here, as the area belongs to a lake named Mamanakka, which has dried up.

Surprisingly, this lake is occupied by a single person.

The court ordered the administration to bring the lake back to its original condition and to recover money from the occupier for this work.

The bench said the floods due to rains in many areas of the state including Chennai cannot be excluded from the matter.

In such a situation, it is a lesson for the government officials to take action against those who encroach on water bodies and rivers or the way of water flowing during the rainy season.

The court said that the Tehsildar should investigate this matter and inform his senior officers in case of encroachment in the water body.
