There has been a huge increase in the demand for Makhana in the domestic and global markets, which has led to its growth rate of 40 percent in the last three years.

Union Food Processing Industries Minister Narendra Tomar told that there is an all-around demand for Makhana and its finished products. During the last three years, there has been a huge increase in it.

Citing data from the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), Tomar said that there has been a steady increase in demand for value-added makhana products.

However, no separate six-digit harmonized system code has been issued for the export of Makhana. For this reason, there is no separate data about its import or export.

However, due to the demand and popularity of Makhana, strong arrangements are being made in this direction.

Union Food Processing Industries Minister Tomar has pointed out that to encourage makhana and its products, the central government has identified six districts in Bihar where makhana is cultivated.

Among them are Araria, Darbhanga, Katihar, Madhubani, Saharsa and Supaul. Special incentives are being given to these districts by including them in the One District One Product (ODOP) scheme.

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research has established a regional research station in Darbhanga, Bihar. This research station has recently released the ‘Swarna Vaidehi’ species of advanced species of Makhana.

Tomar said that modern technology has been developed for the cultivation of Makhana. It also has a makhana-based integrated farming system.
