Violence erupted in Manipur after a free traffic movement, a bandh announced today; one dead and many injured in 24 hours. There is a tense situation in Manipur once again due to violence. The situation remained calm in the violence-affected Kangpokpi district on Sunday morning, but tension was still seen among the people. Today the Kuki-Jo groups have called for an indefinite bandh against the action of the security forces, which affected normal life in the state.
Though there is peace in Kangpokpi district today, but the atmosphere of tension remains. Officials said that one protester died in clashes between Kuki protesters and security forces in various parts of Kangpokpi district on Saturday. More than 40 people, including women and policemen, were injured in this clash.
Clashes broke out between protesters and security forces in the Kuki-dominated district after the police fired tear gas shells to disperse the protesters.
These protesters were protesting Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s decision to allow free traffic movement across the state.
A district official said that additional security forces have been deployed in Gamghiphi and other parts of the district along NH-2 (Imphal-Dimapur Road) and vehicles are being patrolled to ensure law and order.
The official also said that the protesters used slingshots against the army personnel and clashes with the security forces took place till late Saturday night. He said that the windows of at least five vehicles of the security forces were broken.
The Kuki-Zo community and the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) have supported the indefinite bandh called by the Kuki Zo Council (KZC) in all areas inhabited by the community in Manipur. This bandh is a protest against the action of security forces on the protesters opposing free traffic movement on all roads.
Yesterday, agitations and protests took place against allowing the movement of Meitei people in Kuki-do areas but the protesters were wrongly dealt with, the ITLF said in a statement.
The Manipur police said in a statement that 27 security personnel were injured in attacks by Kuki protesters who hurled stones at them and barricaded roads by setting tyres on fire and felling trees.
