Marcos And Duterte Elected As New President And Vice President

Marcos and Duterte elected as new President and Vice President of the Philippines, and human rights activists expressed concern about the country’s future.

Marcos Jr., son of the late Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos, and Sarah Duterte, daughter of outgoing President Rodrigo Duterte, are set to become the country’s new leader.

Marcos Jr. is elected President and Sarah Duterte is elected Vice President. Some human rights activists have expressed concern about the future of the country under the pair’s rule.

Return to power after 36 years.

The childhood name of 64-year-old Marcos Jr., a former provincial governor, parliamentarian, and senator, is Bongbong. He has brought back the prestige to his family after 36 years.

His father was ousted from power due to the ‘People Power’ rebellion and he had to be exiled to America for scandal and human rights abuses.

His mother, Imelda Marcos, who returned home with her children after her husband’s death in the US in 1989, had made two unsuccessful attempts to return.

Duterte is the mayor of Davao.

At the same time, 43-year-old Sarah Duterte is the outgoing mayor of Davao City. Davao City has been her father’s constituency before he was elected president in 2016.

Duterte, a lawyer and reserve officer in the Philippines Army, has created her own political environment. Her party wanted to field her for the presidency, but she chose the post of vice-president.

Protest started.

According to Reuters, around 400 people, including students, demonstrated outside the Election Commission on Tuesday.

The protesters accused the election of rigging. The Election Commission has dismissed complaints from various groups.

Human rights group Karapatan called on Filipinos to reject the new Marcos presidency, saying it was built on lies and propaganda “to malign Marcos’ hateful image”.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International accused Marcos and his running mate of avoiding discussing human rights violations, including those committed under martial law and during President Duterte’s bloody war on drugs.
