India’s star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu could not perform at her best due to a wrist injury but still managed to lift a total of 200 kg to win the silver medal at the World Championships here.
Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Chanu, competing in the 49kg category, lifted 87kg in snatch and 113kg in clean and jerk on Tuesday night.
Jiang Huihua of China received gold with a complete weight of 206 kg.
She lifted 93 kg in the recoil event and 113 kg in the jerky event. Her compatriot and Olympic champion from Tokyo Hou Zhihua won bronze with a total weight of 198 kg (89 and 109 kg).

There was stiff competition among the 11 weightlifters present in Chanu’s category but most of the weightlifters decided not to push too hard.
Zhihua did not appear for her last attempt in clean and jerk and was satisfied with the bronze medal.
Chanu, who is participating in her first international tournament after the Commonwealth Games gold medal, started with a lift of 84 kg in the snatch.
She lifted 87 kg on the second attempt but it was not considered valid.

World Champion 2022 is the first qualifying event for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Weightlifters will have only 10 events in Paris, while there were 14 events in the Tokyo Games.
As per the Olympic 2024 qualification rules, it is mandatory for the weightlifter to participate in the 2023 World Championships and the 2024 World Cup.
