Murugan writes to External Affairs Minister for the release of 23 fishermen from the Sri Lankan Navy.

The Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Dr. L. Murugan has written a letter to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday for the release of the fishermen arrested by Sri Lanka.

Referring to the capture of 23 fishermen along with two boats, he has requested the Sri Lankan Navy for help in their rescue.

It is written in the letter that today a memorandum was received by Murugan from 66 fishermen from Karaikal, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladudurai.

In this, the incident of the capture of 23 fishermen and two boats has been apprised by the Sri Lankan Navy.

After this, Murugan immediately wrote a letter to the External Affairs Minister seeking help. He has also promised all possible help from his side.

Murugan was named as the Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying in the Union Cabinet in July this year.

Prior to this, he was the president of the Tamil Nadu unit of the BJP. Union Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party leader L.K. Murugan was declared elected unopposed to the upper house of the Parliament.

With the election of Murugan to the Rajya Sabha, the number of BJP members in the upper house from Madhya Pradesh has gone up to eight.

In fact, after the deadline for withdrawal of nominations expired, Murugan was the only candidate left for the by-election, so he was declared elected unopposed.

In July itself, after becoming the Governor of Karnataka, the then Union Minister Thaawarchand Gehlot had resigned from the membership of the Rajya Sabha, due to which the by-election had to be held.

In July this year, Murugan was elected as the Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying in the Union Cabinet.

Prior to this, he was the president of the Tamil Nadu unit of the BJP. According to the rules, elections are required to be held within six months of the vacancy of the Rajya Sabha seat.

Of the 11 Rajya Sabha seats from Madhya Pradesh, the BJP has eight, including Murugan, and the Congress three.
