New Zealand made a winning start to the Champions Trophy, but Pakistan was humiliated at home. After Will Young and Tom Latham’s centuries, Glenn Phillips’ fifty helped New Zealand beat Pakistan by 60 runs in the first match of the Champions Trophy 2025. With this, the Kiwi team made a winning start to the tournament. New Zealand, who came out to bat first after losing the toss, scored 320 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in 50 overs. In response, the Pakistan team was reduced to 260 runs.
The opening pair of Devon Conway and Will Young added 39 runs for the first wicket. In the 8th over, Abrar Ahmed broke this partnership by bowling Conway. Conway played an innings of 10 runs off 17 balls. In the very next over, Naseem Shah took the wicket of Kane Williamson. Williamson could score only 1 run. After this, Daryl Mitchell, who came to bat, supported Will Young and added 33 runs for the third wicket.
Haris Rauf got Mitchell caught out by Shaheen Shah Afridi in the 17th over. Mitchell scored 10 runs off 24 balls. After this, Young got the support of Tom Latham. There was a partnership of 118 runs between the two for the fourth wicket. Naseem Shah once again brought Pakistan back and sent Young to the pavilion. Young faced 113 balls and scored 107 runs. Glenn Phillips’ stormy innings ended in the last over. He scored 61 runs with the help of 3 fours and 4 sixes in 39 balls. Wicketkeeper-batsman Tom Latham remained unbeaten after scoring 118 runs. He took 104 balls for this innings. Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf took 2-2 wickets for Pakistan. Also, Abrar Ahmed got a wicket.
Chasing 321 runs, Pakistan had a very slow start. The team had scored 22 runs in 10 overs and lost 2 wickets. Apart from Babar Azam and Khushdil Shah, no one’s bat worked.
