NHRC seeks time from Madras High Court to submit a reply in the Sterlite firing case.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has appealed to the Madras High Court to grant more time to file its response to public interest litigation (PIL) filed by a human rights activist.
Human rights activists have demanded the reopening of the 2018 police firing case at Sterlite in Tuticorin. 13 people were killed in this firing.

A bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice TS Sivagaganam has given time till September 13 to file the reply.
The PIL filed by Henry Tifagne, executive director of the NGO People’s Watch, was put up for hearing before the same bench. Tiffany is also a lawyer herself.
The report submitted by the investigation team was not made public.
He mentioned that the matter was closed in October 2018 after the NHRC initiated an inquiry. The findings of the report submitted by his investigative team have not been made public yet.
The HHRC team had inspected the site. The petitioner has submitted that the grounds for closure of the case in its order were weak and it should be reopened.

He said this while replying in relation to the stabbing to death of a 21-year-old woman earlier this year.
Pinarayi Vijayan’s reply came after IUML Perinthalmanna MLA Najeeb Kanthapuram sought compensation for Balachandran.
Balachandran, a native of Malappuram, lost his daughter Drishti who was killed by Vinesh, a native of Manjeri on June 17, 2021.
MLA Najeeb Kanthapuram demanded compensation for the brutal murder of the daughter of Balachandran, a native of Malappuram, as well as compensation for the shop which was allegedly burnt down by the accused.
What is the whole matter?
On 17 June 2021, a 21-year-old woman was stabbed to death by Vinesh, a native of Manjeri, who entered her house. The woman had died on the spot.
The 13-year-old sister of the victim woman, who had intervened in the attack of the accused, was seriously injured.
Though the accused later tried to escape in an autorickshaw, the locals caught hold of him and handed him over to the police.
