NIA launched search operation in many Tamil Nadu towns in connection with the 2022 car bomb case.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday raided 30 locations in Tamil Nadu and Telangana in connection with the Islamic State recruitment and radicalization case.

NIA officials conducted searches at 21 locations in Coimbatore, 3 in Chennai and 1 in Tenkasi – all in Tamil Nadu.

Besides, the agency also conducted searches at five locations in Hyderabad, Telangana, agency sources told Media.

Searches were carried out at the premises of people involved in the case after fresh evidence was found related to an ISIS module, possibly with links to the suspects in Coimbatore.

Earlier this month, the NIA arrested an accused in connection with the ISIS-inspired car bomb case in Coimbatore for his involvement in the 2022 terror attack.

He was identified as Mohammad Azaruddin alias Azar. This is the 13th person arrested in this case. NIA took over the case on October 27, 2022 and re-registered it.

The car bomb blast in Coimbatore took place on October 23 last year in front of Arulmigu Kottai Sangameshwara Thirukkovil, an ancient temple on Easwaran Kovil Street in Ukkadam, Coimbatore.

The vehicle-mounted improvised explosive device (VBIED) was controlled by deceased defendant Jamesa Mubeen.

Mubeen and his associates were inspired by ISIS’s harsh ideology to plan and carry out terrorist acts after pledging allegiance to self-proclaimed caliph Abu al-Hassan al-Hashimi al -Their Qurayshi.

According to the NIA investigation, the defendant intended to take revenge on infidels (those who do not believe in Islam) through this terrorist attack.

The NIA has so far filed two chargesheets in the case at the NIA court, Poonamallee, Chennai.

The charge sheet was filed against six accused on April 20 this year and five accused on June 2 the same year. The 12th defendant, Mohammad Idris, was arrested on August 2.
