Number of illegal cases in the Indian Ocean region decreased: Indian Navy. There has been a decline in the number of illegal activities in the Indian Ocean-monitored Indian Ocean region.

Reduction in crimes has been possible due to the activation of the Navy and other security agencies. According to information received from the Naval-maintained Information Fusion Center (IFC).

Only 215 incidents of drug trafficking, piracy, armed robbery, improper traffic, and fish hunting were recorded in the Indian Ocean Region in December 2020.

This center works to keep pace with various security agencies operating in the maritime sector and also monitors maritime traffic.

The center has recently prepared a report on maritime activities and incidents in the Indian Ocean region. According to the report, on average, the movement of small and big ships and boats from 11 thousand to 12 thousand was recorded.

December 2020 saw 13,700 ships and boats at a particular time. Indian security agencies in the Indian Ocean region monitor different types of threats and challenges.

According to the report, there was a decrease of 27 percent in cases of piracy, armed robberies in December 2020 as compared to November 2020. 19 cases of piracy attacks were reported in the Gulf of Guinea (Gulf).

These were the highest number of such cases recorded in a month. Similarly, two robbery attempts and one assault incident were reported near the Gulf of Aden.

Each and every robbery incident occurred between Bangladesh and Indonesia. In the same period, a decrease of 11 percent was also reported in cases of drug smuggling.

Security agencies seized methamphetamine, cannabis, and drugs. The Security Agency of Malaysia seized 2,218 kg of methamphetamine in one day, the largest consignment in the last 13 years.

During this time a large consignment of turmeric being smuggled from Sri Lanka was recovered. During this period, there was also a decrease of 25 percent in cases of illegal fishing.

Fish hunting cases were found to be more on the border of Bangladesh, Djibouti, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Qatar, and Sri Lanka.

However, there was an increase of 22 percent in the incidence of illegal migration in December 2020 as compared to November 2020.
