Palaniswami elected leader of AIADMK Legislature Party in Tamil Nadu decided to be Leader of Opposition.
Former Chief Minister E Palaniswami was unanimously elected the leader of the AIADMK Legislature Party in a meeting that lasted nearly three hours on Monday.
With this, he has decided to become the Leader of Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. The second meeting of the newly-elected MLAs was held to elect the leader of the legislative party.

One faction of the party Palaniswami and the other faction of the party, O.P. Panneerselvam was advocating handing over the leadership of the party to the House.

After the meeting, the party in a statement announced Palaniswami to be elected as the leader of the legislative party. Both Palaniswami and Panneerselvam said in a joint statement that the decision has been taken unanimously.
The legislators also held a meeting on May 7, but a consensus could not be reached if the legislature party leader was elected in that meeting.
The AIADMK won 66 seats in the assembly elections.
Significantly, AIADMK won 66 out of 234 seats in Tamil Nadu Assembly while its ally PMK won 5 seats and BJP 4. Sasikala and her nephew Dinakaran were expelled from the party in 2017.

Demand for ‘becoming’ Leader of Opposition from Panneerselvam
Some activists gathered at the AIADMK headquarters and the campus in view of the legislators’ meeting. Some posters were seen on the walls, demanding that Panneerselvam be ‘made’ the Leader of the Opposition.
At the same time, supporters of Palaniswami appeared confident about his selection.
Similarly, some posters near the party office also appeared in favor of VK Sasikala being made the ‘permanent general secretary’ and many were asked to hand over the leadership of the party.
Differences emerged in the party between the selection.
Party leader K.M. met Srinivasan and handed him a letter regarding EPS’s selection. The legislators also held a meeting on May 7, but a consensus could not be reached if the legislature party leader was elected in that meeting.
While the party was meeting at the headquarters on Monday, some reports on social media also claimed that the name of the former Speaker of the LA P. Dhanapal is also being considered for resolving the differences.
