PDP Is Going Through Deeper Crises, As People Are Leaving

PDP is going through deeper crises, as people are leaving the party: Jammu Kashmir. Undeterred Mehbooba is now just rubbing her hands, brother is not getting along on the political front.

It is becoming increasingly difficult for former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to stop the infighting in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and take everyone along.

They felt that the rebellion had stopped, but it did not happen. Those who are standing with her are trying to impose their decisions on her. If she refuses, they leave the party and threaten to go to the opponents.

In the current situation, she seems helpless. Her brother also no longer appears on the political front with her. Former MLC Surendra Chaudhary is also going to join his old warlords who are leaving him.

Chaudhary has resigned from the post of party general secretary. Efforts are on to convince him. Muzaffar Hussain Baig returned to the People’s Conference on Wednesday, rejecting all requests from Mehbooba.

The PDP was formed in 1999 by former Union Home Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed after leaving the Congress. Mehbooba worked hard with her father Mufti Mohammed to strengthen the PDP.

She had strengthened her base in Kashmir by raising her voice against the alleged excesses of the security forces. In 2002, the PDP formed a government in Jammu and Kashmir with Congress.

After this, in the 2014 assembly elections, formed a government with the BJP. Mufti Mohammed died in January 2016. Thereafter, factionalism and infighting in the PDP continued to increase.

The first open rebellion against Mehbooba was made by former Srinagar MP Tariq Hameed Kara. He accused the PDP of joining hands with the BJP, abandoning its original political agenda, and left the party in September 2016.

He also resigned from the membership of Parliament and joined the Congress. On the basis of power pleasure, Mehbooba somehow retained her political clan till June 2018. The PDP-BJP coalition government fell in June.

After this the cracks in the PDP building became visible. Maulana Imran Raza Ansari, the Shia leader and then MLA of Pattan, played the bugle of rebellion on July 2, 2018.

He blamed Mehbooba for the disintegration of the coalition government and even said that she is an incompetent chief minister.

A few days later, Ansari joined the People’s Conference along with his uncle and Jadibal MLA Abid Ansari.

Tangmarg MLA Mohammad Abbas Wani also left the PDP in October 2018 and followed Sajjad Gani Lone at the People’s Conference.

Mehbooba assured her supporters many times that rebellion men used to pressure her to maintain alliances with the BJP.

She did not want to form a government with the BJP, but these people were willing to leave the party and form a separate group and take the pleasure of power with the BJP.

She also made many allegations against former Finance Minister Syed Altaf Bukhari and former Finance Minister Dr. Hasib Drabu.

Drabu severed ties with PDP on December 6, 2018. At the same time, Bukhari separated from the PDP on 19 July 2020.

The PDP started a fierce attack on the central government to take over its cadre. She hinted at adopting a fundamentalist attitude and started politics on the issue of Articles 370 and 35A.

This worsened rather than created, and then what happened in August 2019 is now history. From January 2020 to March 2020, about a dozen former MLAs including former PDP general secretary Dilawar Mir.

Former MLA Yawar Mir, former MLA Chaudhary Zulfikar Ali, and MLC PDP left Altaf Bukhari’s party Jammu Kashmir became part of his party.

Mehbooba was in jail from August 5, 2019, to October 2020. After her release, she tried to take over the party anew.

Muzaffar Hussain Baig was made party patron but hurt by his neglect in policy matters, Baig left the PDP on November 14, 2020.

His wife Safina Baig remained in the PDP. She was the chairperson of the women’s unit of the PDP, but she also left the PDP after not getting a ticket in the DDC election and won the election as an independent.

Meanwhile, former minister Basharat Hussain Bukhari and Pir Mohammad Hussain, who were among the trustees of Mehbooba, searched for themselves in the National Conference, while their political advisor, former MLA Pirzada Mansoor Hussain, also left.

Former Rajya Sabha member Trilok Singh Bajwa and former MLC Ved Mahajan also split. To overcome the situation, Mehbooba gave preference to young faces while making changes in the organizational structure.

It did not even matter and the continuing discord in the party has come to the fore again with the resignation of Surendra Chaudhary.

Kashmir political experts Ahmad Ali Fayaz and Asif Qureshi said that if one looks at the history of the PDP, one would hardly have seen Mehbooba so helpless before.

Along with the mass base, she is losing her old colleagues one by one. The situation is that her brother Mufti Tasaduk, whom she had made MLC and cabinet minister after displeasing many senior leaders of the party, is no longer seen with him in the princely state.

Now she does not even see anything to lose. Till yesterday, Mehbooba who used to dictate to her partymen, sit in front of them in meetings today and listen to their suggestions and assure them to execute them.
