On the proposal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the G-20 meeting held in India, the African Union on Saturday became a permanent member of G-20, the group of countries with the world’s largest economies.

PM Modi announced the inclusion of the African Union as a new member in the inaugural session of the two-day G-20 summit.

Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar said that PM Modi has fulfilled his promise by getting the African Union a place in the G20.

During the BRICS summit, the then President came to the PM and reminded him that he had given us assurance and you have actually done it.

How did India lay the chessboard?

The idea of including the African Union in the G20 was first mooted in June this year.

Then, as the President of G20, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented this proposal by writing a letter to the leaders of the member countries.

It is being told that this idea started after the ‘Voice of the Global South’ summit in January this year, in which most of the 55 countries of the African continent participated.

Later the discussion was taken forward in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where the headquarters of the African Union is located.

Till now there was only one member country from the entire African continent in G20 – South Africa.
