Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday recalled the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the nephew of Prophet Muhammad, on the day of Ashura. PM Modi said that for him there was nothing more important than the values of truth and justice. The 10th day of Moharram is called Ashura day.

Moharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar, which has great significance for the Muslim community. Imam Hussain, the Nawase of Prophet Mohammed Saheb, was murdered on 10 October 680 in Karbala, Iraq. Roz-e-Ashura is celebrated in memory of the martyrdom of Hazrat Hussain. On this day people of the Shia community remember their martyrdom and celebrate mourning.
Explain that both Shia and Sunni communities celebrate Moharram. However, the way of celebrating it between the two is quite different. Shia Muslims take part in the procession on this day and take Tajiya for Imam Hussein. During this time people of the Shia community do not celebrate any happiness in Moharram nor participate in anyone’s happiness. Sunni Muslims fast during this day.
