Sri Lanka’s Religious and Cultural Affairs Minister Vidur Wickramanayake said on Sunday, ‘Soon a law will be passed. This will stop incidents of insulting religion on social media.

This step is being taken after the derogatory remarks made by standup comedian Natasha Edirisurya on religion.

Pastor Fernando was accused of insulting Buddha.

Earlier this month, Pastor Jerome Fernando was charged with making derogatory remarks about Buddha that appeared online.

Explain that more than 74 percent of Sri Lanka’s total population are Buddhists. The Constitution places Buddhism in the first place among the country’s religious beliefs.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe ordered an investigation.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe said on May 15 that such incidents could spark religious strife in the country and instructed the Criminal Investigation Department to launch an investigation into the matter.

It’s worth noting that Fernando, like Edirisurya, has also apologized. However, he went to Singapore and eventually filed a fundamental rights petition to prevent arrest.
