The fishermen association of Kanyakumari and Colachil areas has demanded action against a Panama-flagged vessel that hit a fishing boat off the Tamil Nadu coast.

The Panama-flagged vessel collided with a fishing boat 20 nautical miles off the Colachil coast. 17 fishermen were seriously injured in the accident.

Of these, the condition of two 60-year-old Arul Raj and 50-year-old Chinnadurai is said to be critical.

Both have been admitted to the Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College in Kerala. Another 15 fishermen are admitted to the Colachil Government Hospital.

One of the fishermen on the boat said that they were sleeping in the boat when the ship hit the boat and everyone fell into the sea.

He was saved by other fishing boats. The fishermen said the Panama flagged vessel coming from Singapore did not stop and headed towards Mumbai.

Charles Johnson, secretary of the Minavar Orunginappu Sangam, has demanded legal action against the Panama flagged vessel.

He said the Panama-flagged vessel is scheduled to reach Mumbai on October 25. Officials should not allow the vessel to sail till legal action is taken and due compensation is paid to the fishermen.

Father Churchill, general secretary of the South Asian Fishermen’s Fraternity (SAFF), also demanded strict action against the foreign ship’s personnel.

Girls enter Kathakali for the first time in 90 years of history in Kerala Kalamandalam.

Kerala Kalamandalam, which has taught Kathakali, the Kerala form of dance from across the world, has started enrolling girls for the first time in its 90-year history.

Nine out of 10 students enrolled for the Kathakali course in Class VII of Kalamandal are girls.

Kathakali is a dance form in which only men participate. Female characters are also played by men. Kalamandal’s move is being appreciated all over the world.

Some women started learning Kathakali as early as the 1970s and 1990s.

Some women from abroad took training in Kathakali in Kerala.

KK Gopalakrishnan, a well-known art critic from Kerala, in his research book ‘Kathakali Dance – Theatre’, said that some women from abroad had taken some short-term courses in Kathakali in Kerala.

Most of the women artists have been trained by Kathakali masters in the past, but this is the first time Kalamandalam is including girls in its long-term curriculum.
