Chennai, which has been devastated six years ago by excessive rains, has caused waterlogging after torrential rains on Saturday night and water entered houses in low-lying areas on Sunday.
The doors of three reservoirs have been opened after heavy rains to release excess water. Four teams of NDRF have been sent to Tamil Nadu for relief work.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDRF) has deployed four of its teams in Tamil Nadu following an alert issued by the IMD on Sunday and a request from the state government.
According to a statement issued by the NDRF, one team each has been deployed in Tiruvallur and Chengalpattu districts and two teams in Madurai district.
NDRF said that our 24×7 control room in Arakkonam is closely monitoring the situation round the clock and is working closely with the Tamil Nadu state administration.

It rained all night and continued till Sunday. This is the heaviest rain in recent years.
S Balachandran, deputy director of the Meteorological Department, said that the highest rainfall of 45 cm was received so far in 1976.
After that in 1985, Chennai received 23 and 33 cm of rain on two different days. Six years ago in 2015, the city received 25 cm of rain and at present, the city has received almost the same amount of rain.
