The issue of NRC will again heat up in Assam, Chief Minister Sarma demanded a new NRC.

The issue of NRC may once again heat up in Assam. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today demanded a review of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and its creation afresh.

Speaking at an event in Guwahati, Sarma said that we are in discussions with the All Assam Students Union (AASU) and soon some may come to some decision on this.

Agriculture Minister had talked about going to the Supreme Court

Earlier on Thursday, Assam Agriculture Minister Atul Bora had also raised the issue of NRC and talked of approaching the Supreme Court for its re-verification.

Bora had told that he had a meeting with All Assam Students Union (AASU) and other indigenous organizations after which this decision has been taken.

He said that we will not accept the list of NRC which was published in August 2019.

Illegal Bangladeshi names on the list: AASU.

On the other hand, AASU advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya has said that the names of many illegal Bangladeshi people are included in the final list of this NRC and we want an illegal Bangladeshi free NRC.

He said that only the re-verification of the NRC list can solve this problem. Bhattacharya urged both the Center and the state to approach the Supreme Court for a proper NRC.

Explain that NRC is a register containing the names of Indian citizens, which was prepared only in 1951. It is still being updated for Assam to weed out illegal immigrants.

Significantly, when the draft NRC was published on July 30, 2018, there was a huge controversy over the exclusion of 40.7 lakh people.

The names of 2.9 crore people were included in the draft NRC out of a total of 3.29 crore applications.

Subsequently, the newly updated list of citizens was published in August 2019, which excluded 19.06 lakh, people, out of 3.3 crore applicants.
