The lower court in Tamil Nadu issued summons to ‘God’, Madras High Court expressed surprise, asked questions.

The Madras High Court has expressed surprise over a trial court ordering the production of the deity.

The High Court has asked whether ‘Bhagwan’ can be summoned to appear in the court?

The Kumbakonam court had ordered the authorities of the Paramasivana Swamy temple in Tiruppur district to produce the statue of Moolavar for verification.

This idol was stolen and after being found it was installed in the temple under the rules of Agama and religious rituals.

Justice R Suresh Kumar said the trial court should have appointed a lawyer-commissioner to inspect and verify the genuineness of the statute.

Justice Kumar also pulled up the trial court for ordering the production of the idol of the deity.

The High Court made this observation while passing an interim order on a petition challenging the order of the lower court.

According to the petitioner, the idol in the ancient temple was stolen. Later, the police produced him before the concerned court (special court dealing with idol theft cases in Kumbakonam) on receipt.

It was then handed over to the temple authorities and reinstalled in the temple. Later, Kumbhabhishek was also performed.

At the same time, the judicial officer dealing with the cases of idol theft in Kumbakonam issued a direction to produce the idol.

When an attempt was made by the temple executive officer to remove the idol for production before the court at Kumbakonam.

It was strongly opposed by the devotees including the petitioner and filed a writ petition.

Passing the order on Thursday, the Justice said there was no need to remove the idol and produce it before the court concerned.
